How we’re using an online resource with my reluctant reader. {Review}

Help my kid hates reading! Have you ever heard a desparate mom cry these words, or have you said them yourself?
I have the opportunity to review a Yearly Membership from SchoolhouseTeachers.com for The Homeschool Review Crew. The good news is that I have plenty to say because we’ve been using it for a little over a year. I can say with conviction that it saved my reluctant reader’s school year, and my own sanity.
The beauty of homeschooling is the flexibility it allows for us to meet the needs of our kids in different ways. Our regular school curriculum is literature based. 9 out of 10 kids love it. Those are our real numbers over here, we literally have 10 kids, but that ONE couldn’t be forgotten, and he was falling out of love with school, and fast. I searched desparately for a fix, and found SchoolhouseTeachers.com.
If a program was going to capture his heart it going to have to be digital.
Computers are his love language. He could beat his older brother’s games before he was able to read the instructions. I knew that capturing that same love would catapult him back into learning. The trouble was, digital packages from many programs were expensive and we were already spending most of our budget on our current curriculum. That is when I found SchoolhouseTeachers.com. For less than a math book set, I could get a full year of access to hundreds of online classes in every subject.
He has loved Drive Through History, watched Math Concept Videos and he has even taken an Art class, completely under his own direction. This is the same kids who used to take advantage of my answering another student’s question by heading down the road on his bike. Now, he is learning, reading and telling me about it. We both having the best school year we have had in a really long time. I am so glad I found SchoolhouseTeachers, because I was starting to lose the joy I once had in our school day, and it was taking a toll on my relationship with my son.
The gift of Homeschooling is building better relationships with our kids and igniting a love of learning that lasts them all their lives. We got off track for a bit, but I think we are back on the right path. If you have a reluctant reader/learner this might just be the most important article you read all year, so bookmark it now!
Getting Started was easy.
I let my son choose some of his classes. It was easy because I could simply pull a list of classes by grade level and let him read all about them. Letting him have power to choose really got him interested and kept him engaged. The printable lesson plans make keeping up on his work as simple as checking off the box. We have loved our classes so much that we are looking at adding Coding and Spanish. It took no time to get the hang of studying online and we can afford to keep right on doing it.
I love SchoolhouseTeachers.com because of the added features
My three oldest kids are graduating this May. Internally I knew this was going to be the start of some major paper work. One of my teens wanted to attend a summer camp for writers at a college for credit. I discovered that they would need her full high school transcript with her application. I was so thankful that my SchoolhouseTeachers.com Yearly Membership includes a Gold Membership to the Applecore record keeping site. It took me a week to pull all of her information for the last four years, but it could take you one minute. Each time you take a class, just add it, right now, and when the time comes to submit a transcript, you will not be scrambling. You can just click and send. Your insurance company needs a report card for a discount, today? No problem, Applecore made it easy.
It is not just for your kids, there are Bible teachers and classes you want to hear too.
Your SchoolhouseTeachers.com membership also includes access to RightNow Media which is an amazing online resource of biblical based teaching. Watch current bible studies by Francis Chan, Beth Moore and Andy Stanley and many more. Want a safe site for the kids to watch a video, look no further. There is nothing you ever have to purchase from RightNow to access the SchoolhouseTeachers portion of the site. I was amazed by how many current bible teachers love, have their recent studies available on the site. We even used a video portion to teach our small group.
There is a Class for Everyone.
There is a just for parents section on the SchoolhouseTeachers.com site as well. Want encouragement as a homeschool parent? Want to start planning for college? There are courses for you. Actually, there is something for everyone. Learn ESL as a family or make bible time special by watching a series together and talking about it. With no extra per-student fees, I can let all of the kids take classes in their areas of interest without worries about our budget. With over 300 courses it is not hard to pick something or run out of options.
After a year, I know that SchoolhouseTeachers.com is a fit for any family.
If you are looking for a supplement for electives or if you are wanting a full time, full scale curriculum, there is a class for your every need at SchoolhouseTeachers. And at the same price as most single subject sites you cannot beat the value. Do you want to hear more reviews before you decide? Check them out here…
