Inspire Curious Dino Hunters and Rock Hounds

If you are like our family you might have a dinosaur lover in the house, which brings the question: can you have an intelligent teaching about dinosaurs in your homeschool that does not contradict the Biblical narrative? Northwest Treasures brings solid science methodology and observation into the world of Dinosaur lovers with their course Dinosaurs and the Bible.

The only shame was that it was a bit over my true Dino lovers head, since he is 6, but he did love the pics and hung around while our older students listened. My teen daughter was thrilled to have a new, in depth teaching.

Before we got into the full teaching about Dinosaurs, we checked out the shorted video, Taking the Mystery Out of Geology. Geology is my forte. I love rocks and have a modest collection of samples. I have a collection of field guides for rocks, gems and crystals, but ALL of them follow modern scientific timelines and evidence driven observation. I believe in creation and the biblical narrative. Though I can fill in the blanks and address the comments about millions of years and the heat based expansion model of the Big Bang theory of creation, it gets to be daunting. I feel alone in my stand. Every book we read starts with millions and millions of years ago. So what is the alternative.

Taking the Mystery out of Geology is a quick but packed 20 minute teaching video addressing just that. It is a simple rental for $5 from Vimeo that you get access to for the next three months. It is a great first purchase to get a feel for the material, language and level of teaching in their other courses designed for 5th grade and up.

Do you have younger students? Try their course for Little Rock hounds in Pre-K through 3rd grade Geology for “Little Eyes” and help them observe the world around them with a scientific mind.

So What About Dinosaurs and the Bible?

The full course we were able to review was a six part video course called Dinosaurs and the Bible. You can watch the trailer here. The series is based in science. Our teacher first explained the difference between history and scientific observation. He explained how many terms and timelines are used to support a specific narrative. He then breaks bad with some great science.

Six lessons include…

How We Got Our Modern View of Dinosaurs

Classification of Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs and the Bible – The Great Dinosaur Rush

The Extinction of Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs and the Ice Age

Fossils, Age, and Soft Tissue

The subjects are covered in depth and are relevant topics today. I was just reading about a huge Dino discovery at a shale dig site. They found a nearly perfectly preserved specimen of a stegosaurus type, scaled and even internal organs could be discerned with modern scanning technologies. It make you wonder how that could be millions and millions of years old.

Video Teaching Connects to the Way Teens Learn

I love video teachings because it is one of the better ways my teens learn. We live in an audio video age. With a wide range of learners at our house video touches all learning types. If you order some choice fossil specimens you can cover your most kinetic learners.
