Mommy, What if You Die? {Discussion Book Review}

The other day we were running errands. It was a busy day and our schedule was full. As we unloaded from the car and headed towards one of our many stops, my nine-year-old daughter slipped her little hand it to mine and said, “Mama, sometimes I worry what happens if you die. I will be so sad.”
This World is Not Our Final Home
This world is not our home and we were created for an eternal purpose. While life in this world seems like the entirety of our scope; Karla gives a great perspective through her illustrations. In the story she shares how although we do not remember life in the womb, we experienced it and could not imagine what life in this world would be like.
She likens the joy of finding the love our parents happily awaiting our arrival and the relationships we built here on this earth to the coming joy we will one day feel when we meet the one who created us. There is a God who loved us before we were knit together in our parents womb.
This book is an honest discussion and life and death. A hope filled story because it is one that has an honest open discussion regarding the promise of eternity. It is a story about death that includes the details about our uniqueness and a loving Creator who desires to meet us one day.
Books for a Child’s Great Joys & Fears
Kayla is a wife mother and author with many other talents. She has writer several books for children. We were able to also review her book “A Boy and His Dog” which is a sweet reminder of the blessing a pets can be and how their unending love and support is a true gift in childhood.
I also really enjoyed her book, “Don’t Forget Me.” A beautiful story illustrating a child’s preparation for the world beginning at a single cell, and growing in its mother’s womb. The baby is being reminded the Holy Father‘s love is for him with the admonition to “Remember, I am here.” The yet-to-be-born child can’t imagine why it would need to be reminded so often. As I adult reader, I know all too well why we need to be reminded so often. It is a sweet story about God‘s great love for us; before we were ever even know by our parents.
I understand that Kayla’s books will soon be ready in audio format. I have found that children are great listeners and often think of questions when material comes to them from a different angle, format or reader. The beauty of an audio format is that you can pause at any moment and have a discussion. You can also wait for the end of the chapter where Kayla has appropriate scripture references and discussion questions to help your child verbalize their feelings and thoughts as you work through the story.
If you are dealing with death, preparing for the death of a loved one, or if your child has expressed the same natural concerns like my daughter has, this is gentle hope filled message about the truth of the gospel and of greater purpose, which is eternal.
